As this video discusses, bed bugs have been part of human life for virtually the entirety of our history as a species, and although heavy-duty pesticides all but eradicated bed bugs in the United States after the 1940s, the bugs have recently made a comeback because the environmental and human consequences of using those insecticides were so catastrophic that their use had to be discontinued.
As the speakers in this video point out, it’s a good thing that those insecticides are no longer used, but because bed bugs are impervious to any of the pesticides sold to non-professionals, it’s impossible for a regular person to get rid of them without professional intervention. Therefore, if you think you might have a bed bug infestation, you need to contact a bed bug remediation company.

For about half a century, bed bugs were deemed a thing of the past; they were still present in developing countries, but they’d been largely eradicated in the United States because of the use of heavy-duty insecticides, such as DDT. Once we discovered that DDT and other related insecticides were harmful to the environment and human life, however, it was only a matter of time before bed bugs made their comeback. Now, they’re everywhere from private homes to the public library; but, do you know the signs that you’re in need of bed bug remediation? Look for the following indicators:
Scent
Unlike fleas or mosquitoes, bed bugs smell. They put out a distinct musk, to which humans are not partial. If something smells bad in your bedroom and you don’t know what it is, you may be smelling your bed bug infestation.
Unexplained Bites
It’s easier to tell whether or not you have a bed bug infestation during the winter because mosquitoes are no longer active and therefore cannot be blamed for bed bug bites. However, people who have pets also often mistake the bites for flea bites; so, how do you tell the difference? It’s actually relatively simple: Fleas usually bite around the ankles because they tend to infest the carpet more than anything else, whereas bed bug bites show up in the morning and are located on any part of your body that was left uncovered while you slept. If you’re waking up with bites that you know you didn’t have the night before on your neck, your legs, or your chest, that’s a pretty strong indication that you’re dealing with a bed bug infestation.
Stains
Bed bugs consume blood, which means that they tend to leave a lot of stains behind, especially on light-colored fabrics. At some points, there will be actual blood stains on your bedding, but more often you’ll find dark-colored splotches: bed bug droppings. You should check along the edges of your mattress for these stains, since bed bugs are nocturnal and prefer to hole up in small dark spaces during the day. If you do have an infestation, any crevice located in or around your bed is likely to be full of bed begs and their telltale stains.
